Advertising Won’t Save Your Crappy Product
I’ll say it again – advertising won’t save your crappy product. Just ask Microsoft.
In response to Microsoft’s $300 milllion ad-campaign, Apple launched a new spot deriding Microsoft’s ill-fated attempts at restoring Vista’s public image. This, from the Denver Egotist:
You know, there are some really smart people working on the Apple account at TBWA Media Arts Labs in Playa del Rey. Instead of designing a spot to rip into Microsoft’s new campaign, they create this gem spotlighting the money Microsoft is spending on its advertising vs. its R&D to fix Vista. Fantastic.

I saw this commercial on TV last night and couldn’t help but let out a laugh. It’s a good follow up to Robert Stephens’, the founder of Geek Squad, quote a few years ago: “Advertising is a tax for having an unremarkable product.”
I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the office of whoever is making the advertising decisions over at Microsoft these days. You have to wonder what they’re thinking at this point.

@Paul Singh – No matter what Microsoft does, it seems that Apple has a counter-move that just flat-out makes a fool of Microsoft!
Thanks for sharing the Stephens’ quote – it’s a classic. That said, it truly is spectacular to see a great product paired with wonderful advertising, not unlike the work for the Sony Bravia TV.

I use a Macbook Pro, and I love it. I think Apple ha great products, but I also think that Vista is a good product. Once Apple starts to get a larger market share and becomes the hated enemy like Microsoft is now they will go through the same thing where every guy will try to take them down with hacks and so on, it will happen, it cannot be avoided.

@Alvin Slocombe – Sure, Apple has its growing set of detractors, and rightly so. However, their marketing team outmaneuvers Microsoft time and time again.

Ryan, you are right, there is no doubt that Apple has a way more creative team. There is no competition there at all!
